Along the Hamburger Trail -- Burger Bar - Cleburne
Burger Bar, Cleburne, Texas
|
Cleburne Texas is upon initial inspection just another small Texas Town with a charming courthouse surrounded by very old buildings, some of which look as if they've seen better days.
Then one drives down the main thoroughfares until they reach 109 North Anglin Street and there sits the easy-to-drive-past Burger Bar. It's a 12X12-foot square building with a two-sided sheet metal sign depicting a glass Coke bottle and an open-faced hamburger hanging precariously over the doorway. Inside there is a refrigerator, a small grill, a counter and about four stools, an ice chest full of drinks on one wall and no room for much else. Additional seating consists of a bench out front and a solitary wooden picnic table in the parking lot. They have been grilling burgers here for the locals since 1948. According to the owner the building was the office space originally for a wagon yard, as in horse and wagon sales a hundred years ago, then later became a car lot until after WWII after which it became and remains the Burger Bar to this day. Key words: Get Here Early. With only four stools, this joint fills up in the blink of an eye and not without reason. The grill looks like something you would see in a Charlie Chaplin or WC Fields movie and was probably manufactured while they were still alive. But it's well-seasoned which the owner attributes to the unique taste of the burgers. His daughters do the cooking mostly and burger patties and bacon share space on the black griddle-top of the grill. The burgers are indeed wonderful and make this place well worth seeking out while one is on the road. They make a double burger but we both ordered single-patty bacon burgers and shared a large order of fries and could just barely finish them; they are satisfying. If you take the time and trouble to find this place you will not be disappointed. Unique building, personable people behind the counter, good conversation with the friendly locals and great old-fashioned burgers make this place worth looking for. More InformationAddress:
